Getting to Caracol Belize
Caracol (Snail) is the largest known archaeological site in Belize and one of the largest in the Maya Region. It is located deep within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve and lies about 500 meters above sea level. The site is about 50 miles from San Ignacio and takes a little more than 2 hours to drive there. From San Ignacio, the drive passes through two small villages and through the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. There are countless opportunities to see wildlife and many of Belize’s flora.
On the drive back, you can stop and take a refreshing swim in one the natural granite pools in the Mountain Pine Ridge.
